That’s what a recent scientific article seems to indicate. The article is entitled, “Intense Sweetness Surpasses Cocaine Reward“, and appears in PLoS One, a major open-access journal (this means you can read the article without a subscription).
Basically, after a couple of days, lab rats seem to prefer getting saccharin or sucrose to intravenous cocaine. The study was conducted for about a month, and after a few days, for the remainder of the month, the rats would consistently choose to get more sugar water than more cocaine.
I’ll leave the implications about our own propensity towards things like candy and pop up to you. Maybe we are really different than lab mice. Then again, maybe we aren’t.
